IMIRCE - The Emigrants Commemorative Centre
Established in 2012, the Emigrants Commemorative Centre and Gaeltacht Diaspora Committee successfully raised funds to build its centre in Carna, Co Galway, which opened its doors in May 2018, with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh in attendance.
The centre has built an international network of ambassadors and collaborates with centres and groups in North America. It organises international conferences on various emigration topics and conducts ongoing historical, cultural, and genealogical research programs. This development underscores a continued commitment to the local community and cultural tourism in the region.
2024 marked a new chapter of the centre’s history with the next phase of development for the Emigrants Commemorative Centre - the beginning of construction for two key additions: an Emigrants Memorial Garden and an Interpretive Centre to be housed in a new wing added to the existing building.
This project forms part of the overall Údarás na Gaeltachta strategy to develop the tourism industry in the Gaeltacht. This strategy is focused on developing at least 10 key attractors that have the capacity to attract over 30,000 unique visitors each, thereby being financially sustainable and adding significantly to the Gaeltacht economy by creating employment and helping to stem population decline.
The immersive experience, designed by Mirador and manufactured by Triangle Productions through competitive tendering, opened in July 2026 and highlights the stories of local Carna residents who left Ireland for a better quality of life in America, the impact they had on the world of politics, education and philanthropy and the deeply rooted culture and heritage of this exceptional place in the heart of Connemara Gaeltacht.
